The overly-hyped comeback of Britney Spears at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas last Sunday lived up to all the negative press even the most ardent anti-Britney fan could have hoped for. Drawing ridicule by appearing as a stripper and then failing at miming her new single, online bingo players who took the time to view the awards shared in the international collective pain of watching something truly embarrassing. At one stage, cameras showed rapper 50 Cent in the audience clearly looking bewildered by Spears’ dance routine on stage. "She blew it," gossip artist Perez Hilton told Reuters. "Everybody knows Britney lip-syncs, but that's because she dances so much. She barely even danced in this. It was so bad. It was painful. It was embarrassing. And I loved it!" Most miffed by Britney’s appearance was hip-hop singer Kanye West, who said the night before: "I can't believe she would perform. She hasn't had a hit record in years." (West has had a lot of hit records recently, but that did not stop him from coming away from the awards empty handed) Trying to reverse a sharp slide in audience viewership, MTV took the awards to gambling hotspot Las Vegas. However, it seems punters would have been better seeking out the Vegas Strip’s more traditional entertainments. Failing that, any online bingo hall found on Bingo Street would have been more preferable to what was offered up last Sunday.
