A hit piece on the online gaming industry has appeared in the Wall Street Journal authored by a land casino supplier and timed to influence the last Wednesday’s Congressional hearings on the current Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). The full page anti-online gambling advert titled “Who Will Face the Issues” is sponsored by Derek Webb, founder of Las Vegas-based Prime Table Games. The advert has appeared in previous anti-online gaming campaigns. Online bingo and online bingo halls is a fast growing niche in the online gaming industry which has suffered badly in the aftermath of UIGEA’s implementation in late 2006. UIGEA seeks to interrupt financial transactions between US-based customers who play bingo online and international online bingo games operators. Online gaming industry observers have commented that the piece covers the same perceived regulatory problems associated with international Internet gaming, citing gaming fraud, consumer protection and protection of intellectual property rights as major concerns. "Internet gaming, by its very nature, has great potential for abuse," said Webb in a press release. "Site operators also should pay fees towards problem gambling treatment and research." Online gaming advocates believe the attack is symptomatic of the land-based gaming industry’s fear of the impact represented by online gaming such as bingo online. Land-based gambling operators and related industries are further threatened by online gambling’s stellar growth over the last few years which has seen many punters choose to go online for their gambling needs rather than make the trip to land-based casinos and bingo halls.
