US Congressman Barney Frank's Internet Gambling Regulation and Enforcement Act (IGREA) is starting to cause headaches amongst anti-online gambling advocates. IGREA has seen a steady stream of sponsors pledge their support to the bill which would replace the current and controversial Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA). In an item by Paul M. Weyrich of the Free Congress Research and Education Foundation, gambling is described as "...a particularly destructive addiction, falsely leading people to believe that if they just bet on one more game they will turn a profit. In reality, many destroy their finances, their marriages and their lives." There was no attempt in the article to back up these claims with supporting statistics. Online bingo industry observers have joined pro-online gaming advocates in saying the above argument ignores the protection that would be provided by a regulatory legislation as proposed in the IGREA bill. The UK online bingo games industry is an example of a well regulated gaming environment where people who play online bingo are protected against such abuses as mentioned in the Weyrich article. UIGEA currently makes it a criminal offence for non-US online bingo halls to accept payment by US-based online bingo players. Recent Congressional hearings into the viability of UIGEA have put the controversial law in the spotlight with many asserting the law is impractical. IGREA would seek to change the emphasis to a regulated gambling environment that would benefit US government tax revenues while also protecting online gamblers.
