European media reports are claiming the Danish government has reacted positively to a European Commission (EC) initiative to have Denmark’s gambling monopoly policies changed in favour of a well regulated gambling market. Currently, all online gaming, including online bingo games and online bingo halls, are operated through the state-owned Danske Spil organisation. Danish online gambling group Unibet issued a statement congratulating the government on pledging to work for a "modern, regulated and responsible Danish gambling market." "We are looking forward to, together with the Danish government, creating a modern, regulated and responsible Danish gambling market", Unibet CEO Petter Nylander recently wrote in relation to the current Danish monopoly policy. Denmark received from the EC what is called a “reasoned opinion” in March 2007 advising the Danish government that its restrictions on the betting market is incompatible with existing EU law. The opinion went on to say that the existing monopolistic gambling laws in Denmark had not proved necessary, proportionate and non-discriminatory. Danske Spil is currently the only entity allowed by Danish law that can offer games, lotteries and bets to Danish gamblers. However, reports suggest that the Danish government’s stance over gambling may be softening, a development that could see online bingo operators abel to enter a growing market of people who play online bingo.
