Greek gambling policy about to change? - Online Bingo News

There’s speculation that the current Greek government attitudes and policies towards access of the country’s gambling market may be about to change. Greece currently operates one of the most restricted gambling monopolies in the European Union (EU), but recent Greek media reports speculate an upcoming meeting may see a change in these policies.

European Commission official Charlie McCreevy and Greek economic minister George Alogoskoufis are scheduled to meet soon to possibly discuss the changes Greece needs to make to its protectionist gambling laws in order to bring them into line with EU standards.

It’s believed that the meeting is an attempt by Greece to avoid European Court of Justice charges against its state gambling monopoly OPAP. UK minister signals help on the way for land bingo operators - Online Bingo News

UK Gambling Minister Gerry Sutcliffe recently addressed the Bingo Association’s AGM and is reportedly set to introduce measures aimed at helping land-based bingo clubs over the next few weeks.

The news has already been reflected in an increase in the shares of the Mecca Bingo chain, the land bingo operation owned by major gaming industry company Rank.

It is being speculated that the measures could include reducing restrictions currently placed on gaming machines found in many bingo clubs. The industry is, however, still under pressure due to a double tax on bingo games and a UK-wide smoking ban.

However, land bingo is unlikely to see relief from the double tax burden which sees bingo clubs paying VAT of 17.5% and then a gross profits tax of 15% on all bingo participation fees.

PartyGaming says deal with US authorities possible by end of the year - Online Bingo News

Good news for many in the online bingo industry may be on its way with the reports of a possible settlement between major online bingo operator PartyGaming and US authorities signaling a softening in US attempts to prosecute online gaming companies.

PartyGaming operates the PartyBingo online bingo hall and is a major player in the online gaming industry as a whole. When the US implemented its notorious Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in late 2006, PartyGaming was amongst the many non-US gaming companies that had to withdraw from the US market to avoid prosecution.

PartyGaming CEO Mitch Garber has said to reporters this week that he expects a settlement with US authorities over the company’s business activities in the US pre-UIGEA to be reached by the year’s end.

"It's very hard to predict. There's some fluidity to it. We're in the midst of a process and our attorneys tell us it is moving in the right direction and at the right speed," Garber said.
